A Licence To Frill!

If the mass swooning of garden party prissy prints is somewhat wasted on you, take care not to completely dismiss this new wave of feminine romanticism, as it may still have something to offer, even for a frill seeker like yourself! For Summer 2016, a new fashion wave is gathering momentum, fronted by high profile designers including Givenchy and Gucci, the ruffle is rife!

If you manage to get ruffles right, you are guaranteed a scene stealer outfit. Disregard nostalgic notions of ra-ra skirts complete with pigtails and a mouthful of cake frosting, flouncy fashions have grown up.

The key is to find the drama. Frills should not be apologetic, commit to the trend, otherwise it may look indecisive. The flounce or the frill should be the focal part of the outfit! It should be structured and over the top but grounded by a block color or played down accessories! Voluminous flounces have a higher impact when contrasted with sleek hair and heavier footwear. Own it, don’t let the frill wear you!

Whilst your ruffle style should not emulate a toddler in a tiara, it is an opportunity to move away from the slick and symmetrical and allow your style a more theatrical appeal. Take your cue from the pioneers at Gucci, who are inviting us to embrace the magic and find our own particular brand of kookiness.

The unique quality of women, means that whilst some will embrace the license to frill, others may experience an instinctive toe curling, preferring to isolate the ruffle in a played down accessory. Acknowledge the trend and wear a structured trouser with ruffled pocket detail or play safe in denim skinnies and ruffled suede boots.

A new wave of “who cares what people think” attitudes is liberating our style choices. The very creation of fashion involves artistry and craft, and in recognizing that, we feel freer in playing dress up and less worried about getting it right! Remember, fashion is not something which exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening! (Coco Chanel)
