Eclectic Express!

If the world’s leading fashion designers were ever giving us the green light to pile on the prints, now is that time. This summer, you are your own blank canvas to decorate just as you please. More is never enough! We are being invited to go tribal, dally with kooky kitsch and in general, embrace all things patterned!

Whether you are working chintzy floral or trippy acid graphics, the key to confident clashing patterns, is to think about the silhouette. Take the lead from Giambattista Valli whose catwalk collection showcased a floral mash up. Never in danger of looking prissy, the models contrasted bookish high necks and tank tops with strikingly short hemlines to reveal long legs and a flirtatious finish. Just add gladiators!

If floral patterns are just not part of your summer staple, opt for something more grown up. Graphic print dresses should be nipped in at the waist with a heavy leather belt, creating a flattering silhouette for most body shapes. Pair with a contrasting print trouser and heavy sandals. Lazier looks involve patchwork bombers and skirts. The fashion designers at Etro have done the hard work for you, muddling and mashing patches that are ready to wear.

At the opposite end of the style spectrum the graphic goes particularly playful. The idea is to forget everything you have ever learnt about fashion, and just add some humor. Jeans are splashed with random color, matching is sacrilege and preppy slogans entertain.

Clash, contrast and never comply. Have some fun. Don’t worry about fusing fashion from the deepest corners of the globe, attend the multi cultured fashion pick and mix, where you are encouraged to pair patterned low slung harem pants from the Middle East with Indian tasseled fringes. Mixing and matching takes us back to dress up! Just throw on what you find and come as you are.
